I don’t know about you, but cleaning is not on my list of fun things to do. That’s one of the reasons I try to get it done as soon as possible – so I can cross it off my to do list and be done with it.
With that being said, I actually do know some people who love to clean. But for the rest of us, it can often be a struggle to even begin.
But you know what – I don’t think cleaning has to be a bore or something we dread.
Nope – with a good attitude and a little creativity, I think we can make it more enjoyable!
Here is a list of 6 ways to make cleaning more fun and help you get it done faster:
Listen to an audiobook
If you are anything like me, you want to read more often but can hardly find the time to do so. Because of this, I like to take advantage of certain times that I have available to listen to audiobooks.
One of my favorite times to listen is on my commute to and from work. I have about a half hour drive so what better time to get some listening in?
Another great time to listen to an audiobook is when cleaning. The audiobook can be playing on a loud speaker or through headphones. Either way, what a great way to pass the time!
My husband and I listen to audio books through Audible – one of the most post popular ways to listen to them. You can start a 30-day free trial today!
Turn on music
By this I mean turn on something loud and fast – something that gets you moving! (If for you that happens to actually be something more light and classical, then by all means – use what you love and know will work for you.)
I love to have music on that I know well and can sing along to. And when I have something on that really gets my heart racing, the faster I move.
Use the music however you can to make you clean faster and more efficiently. If you’re cleaning with your family, turn on something the whole family knows and have a sing along.
I believe cleaning in silence often just slows us down and make us sleepy. So give music a try and maybe dance a little from room to room 🙂
Make it a family event
Have you ever cleaned together as a family? Often when we do tasks that aren’t typically fun, doing them with people whose company we enjoy makes the tasks so much more enjoyable. I know I love when my husband and I clean together. (Not to mention since the entire family lives in the house, it is everyone’s responsibility to clean!)
Plus, the more people that clean, the faster it will get done.
You can even assign each family member a different task each time you clean to change things up a little.
Afterward, you can get back together as a family and have some quiet time together or maybe a loud dance party. That depends on your family 🙂
Have a race
If you are cleaning with your family, set a timer and see who can get their area clean the fastest. Kids love to be timed! I know this from when I was a teacher and would count down from 30 how long my students had to clean everything up off the floor. Boy did they move fast!
You can set the timer for 5, 10, 15 minutes – whatever would work best for your family. Kids also love when they have an add amount of time to get something done like 12 or 14 minutes. Once the timer goes off, then all of you stop cleaning for the day.
Turn on the TV
OK, so this is the only one on this list that I think can very likely actually slow us down when cleaning, so I almost didn’t include it. But it certainly has the fun part with it!
It is true that watching TV while cleaning can be a huge distraction. But if you don’t let it slow you down too much, then it can also be nice background noise as you clean.
I like to have a show on that I already know well so if I leave the room for a minute or two, I don’t really miss anything. For me this show is usually Friends 🙂 If you turn on a show that you don’t know well, you may end up stopping your cleaning to rewind whatever it is your watching. So be sure you don’t start something new during this time.
If you don’t care as much about the fast part of cleaning and just want to make it more enjoyable, then by all means, turn on whatever you’d like. But if you’re looking to make cleaning more fun and save you time, then be careful if you choose to watch TV while you clean and what you choose to watch.
Reward yourself
Yes, cleaning is a responsibility and we all know we don’t always get rewards with responsibilities. That’s not real life, right? But if you have spent a lot of time cleaning one day, let yourself take a bath and relax, have an extra scoop of ice cream, or watch the next episode of your favorite show. Your chores are done so you have the time!
Cleaning really can be more fun and enjoyable! It just takes a little effort on our part (but really – these things don’t require much effort at all!).
In what ways do you make cleaning more fun? Please let me know in the comments.

I am totally a music person! Always have to have it on when I’m cleaning, and if it’s something I can sing along with, that’s even better. On the weekends, we’ll usually work together as a family for half an hour or so, which helps everyone to feel like we’re all equally contributing (because, you’re right…they made the mess too!). And my daughter loves the timer. We usually set it for 10 to 15 minutes, and depending on how distracted she gets (i.e. how much she actually does), she can earn up to double that time as video game time.
It’s all about finding what works, for sure!
I love this! Thanks so much for sharing 🙂
